10 Interesting Facts about Bosnia and Herzegovina

  1. Bosnia is named after river Bosna coursing through the country The name Bosna could derive from Illyri “Bass-an-as”, which would derive from the Proto-Indo-European root “bos” or “bogh”—meaning “the running water”. So Bosnia is really a land of river(s). And Herzegovina (“herzog’s [land]” comes from German word herzog meaning duke a title given to noble man Stjepan Vukčić Kosača: Herceg of Hum and the Coast. The border between Bosnia and Herzegovina is Ivan mountain, but it is a single country.

2. Besides Bosnia and Herzegovina, two words in name also have Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Christopher and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Thomas and Princip, and Trinidad and Tobago.

3. People in Bosnia and Herzegovina just love their coffee. The country has the tenth highest coffee consumption per capita in the world.

4. Besides country of rivers, Bosnia and Herzegovina is also nicknamed the “Heart Shaped Land” due to the country’s slight heart shape.

5. Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics. It was the first socialist city to host a winter games

6. Sarajevo was the first city in Europe with an electric tram

7. According to, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin study, one of European last primary forests can be found here. It is Perucica forest, part of the national park Sutjeska. The country’s highest peak, Maglić, is also part of the park as well as 81-meter high Skakavac waterfall

8. There are four national parks spread out across the country, from the southeastern border with Montenegro to the northwestern border with Croatia and its north-central region:

    • Sutjeska national park, the oldest national park in Bosnia and Herzegovina, founded as early as 1962

    • Kozara National Park, established in 1967. Memorial site dedicated to the victims of WWII is also part of the park

    • Una National Park, established in 2008 covering Upper Una and Unac Rivers and the source of the famous Krka River

    • Drina National Park, established in 2017 is the newest addition to the list of Bosnian National Parks

9.  One of the major Catholic pilgrimage destinations, Medjugorje is placed in southern part of the country. The apparition of the Virgin Mary was reported in 1981, by six local children.

10. On 1st September 2007, 6,980 couples kissed for 10 seconds in town Tuzla, erasing the previous Guinness World kissing Records of the Philippines and Hungary. Tuzla also tried to set the Guinness World Record for the world’s huge meat pie –  burek, weighing 650 kilograms and gigantic portion of ćevapi, 1,500 pieces of this delicious meat balls.
