Bosnia and Herzegovina has so many places worth a visit… The first part of this guide was about Bihaća and here is a little bit about town of Jajce. Make sure to stay tuned for some more amazing places of history and nature.
Jajce
The first references to the name of Jajce in written sources is from the year 1396, but the fortress had already existed at that time. The town is famous for its beautiful 22-metre (72 ft) high waterfall where the Pliva River meets the river Vrbas. Also, Jajce is a former capital of the Bosnian Kingdom.
Jajce’s name comes from the word jaje that means an egg in Bosnian languange. The fortress in Jajce is built in the shape of an egg and it was name the Egg Fortress and later gave its name to the city.
Very close from Jajce town there is also a Pliva Lake, favourite spots for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. Old wooden watermills on Pliva Lake are one of the most famous Bosnian landmarks.

The Mithraeum
This temple is dedicated to the Persian invisible sun god, Mithras. The cult of Mithras was widespread throughout the provinces of the Roman Empire, including the province of Dalmatia.
During the archaeological excavations of the Mithraeum temple, a silver brooch with a curved foot and 16 coins were found providing proof that the temple was built in the early 4th century AD. The Mithraeum is one of the oldest monuments in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Old city of Jajce
The walled city of Jajce is predominantly Ottoman in style, although it dates back further than this.
At the top of the cobbled streets of Jajce is the old fortress, the place from where Bosnian king Stephen Tomašević or Stephen II was ruling from.

Catacombs
In the 14th century Hrvoje Vukcic Hrvatinic, ordered building the catacombs as a place of last residence for himself and his family.
Underground church and crypt are a monument of particular value.

Luke’s Bell Tower
The tower is tall, dominating the surrounding buildings.
The shrine was damaged in the past and only its walls have survived.

AVNOJ Museum
In November 1943, the Antifascist Council of National Liberation of Yugoslavia (AVNOJ) took place in Jajce.
The building in which the meeting was held is now a museum.
